This was my morning...
Oh, a thought has hit me... some good points... nice stream of consciousness developing.... RING RING RING damn it where was I.... Ok, here we go with that article I've been trying to finish... oh this is going nicely... the idea is really developing RING RING RING RING URGH! where was I??? Fine, let's do some writing... yes, this piece is starting to shape up... I like where this is headed RING RING RING RING RING RING For the love of Mary!
As I told Twitter:
The telephone is the world's RUDEST invention. Really, why do people think I'm supposed to drop everything I'm doing and just talk to them?? SEND AN EMAIL
If I came to your house and no matter what you were doing and rang a bell in your face until you stopped what you were doing and spoke to me wouldn't that be rude? Same thing.
This generally accepted notion that its perfectly OK to interrupt someone who is thinking, or reading or writing by ringing a bell at him is rude rude rude.
Worse, if I ignore the person ringing the bell in my face I'm the one with no manners? How does that make sense?
If it's something short, SEND A TEXT OR EMAIL. If a long conversation is required or desired, that's fine too SEND A TEXT OR EMAIL ASKING IF NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO CALL.
