Essential Books

What are the essential books of the 20th century? I'm compiling my list, with an eye toward finishing them all by, you know, the time I die.

Here are 10 books, I've read so far, and chosen for no particular reason except that I thought of them just now, which I deem "essential."

I hope you will make your own suggestions, too. (And I'd especially like to hear from a few literary friends.)

Fiction
Grapes of Wrath
All the King's Men
Go Tell it on the Mountain
Animal Farm
Atonement
The Cannibal Galaxy

Non Fiction
Constantine's Sword
Popes Against the Jews
If This is a Man / Survival in Auschwitz
Rightuous Victims
The Great Game
