He almost had me fooled. But now it seems like Chris Christie is not the objective, non-partisan, mission-focused public servant we thought he was back last year when he was endorsing Obama and blasting a Republican Speaker of the House.
I say this because Chris wants to spend $25 million for an October special election to choose a temporary senator who will serve a three week term on the grounds that it is Important for New Jersey
Yeah right. What's really going on is this.
As governor, calling the special election is his prerogative. He also has the option of appointing someone, or leaving the seat empty until November. But choice A leaves him open to a lawsuit and controversy, while choice B means putting a damper on his presidential ambitions. Though he's sure to win his re-election bid this November, if popular Democrat Corey Booker is running for Senator at the same time, lots more Democrats may come to the polls in support of Booker, giving Christie's challenger a coat-tail boost.
Christie's solution: Spend the $25 million!
