I like learning gemerah, mostly because of the bright hot spotlight it shines on the absurdities of modern Jewish life. One of my favorite examples,
is the story of how R. Yochanan b. Beruka served as chazan at the Godol Hador's minyan, but used a nusach/liturgy of his own choosing. In our day, such an inpetuous chazan would be stoned on the spot, but R. Shimon b. Gamliel didn't even blink.
