BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR

From Haaretz February 08, 2005
"Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, spiritual leader of the Lithuanian stream, instructed Degel Hatorah MKs within the United Torah Judaism party to vote for a referendum bill [on the Gaza disengagement plan]"

Labor faction whip, MK Eitan Cabel, said he intends to submit a bill for a referendum on drafting yeshiva students for military service. "Until now we were careful about referendums , but if Rabbi Elyashiv supports holding one, there's no reason not to on drafting yeshiva students," Cabel said.
Refresh my memory. Was a referendum held in 1967? Were Israeli's asked to go to the polls to approve the establishment of settlements in Gaza? No?

So why is the right suddenly making such a fetish of referendums?
