Anglican Exegesis

I was recently charmed to learn that a drasha was used by John King, Bishop of London, in 1608 to "prove" that his rivals, the Puritans, were illegitimate.

His text was Songs 8:11. (כרם היה לשלמה בבעל המון נתן את־הכרם לנטרים איש יבא בפריו אלף כסף) According to the drasha that vineyard was the apostolic authority given to keepers, namely the king and his bishops, not, chas v'sholom, anyone else.

A similar sermon was delivered by Lancelot Andrews, another famous churchman of the period,  on Numbers 10:2 ( עשה לך שתי חצוצרת כסף מקשה תעשה אתם והיו לך למקרא העדה ולמסע את־המחנות ) According to Bishop Andrews, the two trumpets refer to church and state, with the monarch having authority over both.
