"Tremendous" is the worst Jewish word

The clever people at The Atlantic have compiled a list of words they think should be banned from the English language, including "actually", "literally" and "guru"

You can read more about it here

Anyone who suffers through Orthodox Jewish writing has his own list of words he hopes never to see again. My winner is "tremendous" which serves as the frum-writers all purpose go-to adjective whenever he wishes to indicate that something happened often, or that whatever occurred was significant. Some examples from Charedi.com (the first two) and the Jewish Week (the last two) include:

  • There he continued to study with tremendous diligence...
  • And then suddenly this young iluy appeared, only about 21 or 22, a boki and a tremendous learner...
  • And we can expect the light found in this tremendous sorrow can change the world...
  • Rabinowitz and Dorf thought there was a tremendous need for more...
I have a few other phrases, expressions and adjectives that belong on this list, but first: What have you got?
